Books and Bricks for Brisas: Music to Help Honduras

Brisas Del Valle, Honduras is a small Chorti village with limited resources.  Lena Newman, a Shaker Heights HS graduate and member of Heights Christian Church, visited the village while serving as an intern in Honduras for three months in 2009.  That summer she submitted a proposal to the Davis Projects for Peace requesting funding to build and supply a library there.  After receiving the grant, she traveled back to Honduras last fall (2010) to work with the residents of Brisas to bring this dream to life.

Unfortunately due to weather conditions and the difficulties inherent in trying to build in this kind of location, Lena had to leave before the work was completed.  In November Lena shared her work in Honduras with members of HCC at one of our adult forums.  Funds were approved to purchase a set of Spanish language encyclopedias as well other books.  Lena traveled back to Honduras over the winter to work on completing the library.  Once there she discovered that additional funds were needed for doors, windows, a floor and a roof.

Members of HCC decided that a music concert would be a fun event as well as an opportunity to raise these needed funds.  Our goal is to raise at least $1,000 and the HCC Outreach committee has agreed to match gifts given at the concert up to $500.

HCC's house band, Rock the Word, will perform, featuring Doug and Jani McWillaims along with their son, Canyon.  The InterReligious Task Force on Central America will be providing Spanish language poetry from the region and a slide show of pictures from Lena's trips will also be shown.  Come out for this entertaining and inspiring evening of music!
